Zoom buys a local sales team

Zoom Media & Marketing in the U.S. has gained a presence in more than 3000 new venues – and, perhaps as importantly, a large local sales organisation – through the acquisition of Californian firm Sports Display.

Sports Display has non-digital displays providing local information and advertising in some 3000 venues across the U.S. and Canada, with a strong emphasis on sports and leisure locations.

They include golf courses, racquet clubs, fitness centres, and arenas as well as supermarkets and community centres, with some sites hosting more than one display.

It has also moved into digital over the last year, adding screens to about 150 locations.

But as important to Zoom as this newly-acquired media inventory, and its audience, will be Sports Display’s hundred-strong sales team.

“The acquisition of Sports Display immediately provides Zoom with one of the top local sales organisations in the advertising industry,” said Zoom president Dennis Roche. “This will allow us to bring local advertising partners and revenue to our growing venue footprint.”

Sports Display’s sales team will now be able to offer clients all of Zoom’s media properties – more than 25,000 screens and 55,000 static locations in some 10,000 venues, including gyms, indoor soccer centres, bowling alleys, restaurants and nightclubs.

An exercise with Sports Display representatives selling Zoom inventory was conducted last summer, while the companies remained separate.

“In the out-of-home industry, local advertising can account for as much as 70 percent  of revenue,” said Zoom CEO François de Gaspé Beaubien.

Sports Display’s management team will remain with the operation under Zoom’s ownership.
