NBC Universal discards medical networks

NBC Universal in the U.S. has sold its Patient Channel and Newborn Channel hospital networks to specialist TV firm Interactivation.

Interactivation, which operates video-on-demand networks such as Mag Rack and Concert TV, has acquired the two channels from NBCU’s iVillage division for an undisclosed sum.

The Patient Channel is shown in about 1600 hospitals across the U.S., reaching 6m people annually, while The Newborn Channel is present at a further thousand sites and is said to have a yearly audience of 2.5m, representing 60 percent of new mothers.

“While iVillage is still very committed to the health category, our focus is to grow our core online and mobile women’s audience,” said Jodi Kahn, executive VP of iVillage.

“Therefore, we determined that The Patient Channel and The Newborn Channel would be better aligned with Interactivation, which is committed to building businesses with non-traditional TV distribution models,” she explained.

“Health-related content has been an important part of our cable television programming and we’re delighted to add both networks to our media properties,” said Matthew Davidge, president of Interactivation.

Both networks were originally joint ventures of NBC Universal and GE Healthcare, another subsidiary of NBC’s parent General Electric.
