Museum puts literary greats on 100 digital screens

Two new digital-signage deployments by a British zoo and a Dutch museum point to growing interest in the medium from the cultural sector.

The Letterkundig Museum in The Hague – the Dutch national literature museum – has installed a video wall consisting of 100 LCD displays to tell the story of 100 famous figures from the nation’s literary history.

Video is synchronised across the displays using BrightSign media players, but stops when a visitor chooses a screen to learn more about a particular author. The selected screen then provides further detail on that figure before the video wall reverts to its synchronised display.

The museum’s installation, integrated by Visual Hardware Services as part of a three-year renovation project, also includes seven kiosks where patrons can watch films and plays and listen to literary readings, and a wall display of literary-themed video served by eight projectors.

In Britain, meanwhile, Bristol Zoo is using digital signage to convey messaging about natural history, conservation issues and events. Currently the zoo has six displays in the aquarium along with two each in the insect exhibit and the restaurant, and management plan to add more.

“Bristol Zoo wanted to replace their light boxes with digital displays that give visitors an entertaining zoo experience that makes their messages more memorable,” said Andy Phillips, director at integrator Audionation, which built the network. Like the Letterkundig Museum, Bristol Zoo is using BrightSign media players.
