Dutch school screens raise funds for third-world water

A network of screens built into water coolers in Dutch schools is reaching a quarter of a million pupils across the country.

The Tenq – pronounced “tank” – project has so far placed the water coolers with 19-inch LCD displays in 365 secondary and vocational schools, whose students can upload photo and video content.

And the programme is now moving into elementary schools too with a version for younger children aged four to 12, called Tenqy.

Tenq is the result of a partnership linking water companies and health bodies, which donate a share of water sales from the units to Aqua for All, a Dutch nonprofit which works to provide clean water to developing nations.

“When we envisioned the concept of Tenq, we saw an opportunity to build a community for participating schools,” said Fine Trossèl, Tenq’s MD. “We realised that if students could contribute content, they would be more likely to view the screens and pay attention longer.”

The network is run on Scala software and was deployed by the technology firm’s Dutch reseller Hulskamp.
