A Texas college is offering what it claims is the first degree-level programme in digital signage.
Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas is delivering the two-year associate degree course using the Second Life virtual world as a platform.
Modules cover design, digital marketing and content scheduling. Scala software is used for training in digital-signage technology, along with Adobe’s Photoshop and Flash.
“The incredible explosion of digital-signage technology in the business community really spoke to us about the need for a degree programme in this area,” said Patricia Lister-Golin, programme specialist in digital-signage technology for TSTC.
“Our small town in west Texas already has digital displays at movie-rental stores, gas stations and local retail chains, so we knew that it was time to get serious about this at the college level,” she added.
Five students are currently taking the course, with a further ten expected to join in the autumn. Associate degrees are the highest level offered in any subject by the college.
“What we found is that many students and professionals have a great talent for graphic design but don’t want to work in the Web design field, which is the typical career path for most graphic designers already in the marketplace,” Lister-Golin said.
“They want to specialise in a new, up-and-coming area of graphics, but they often lack the ability to strategise, identify their audiences, measure the results, and refine the digital-signage content for greater impact. I think this is the first time anyone has paired a graphic-design degree with marketing strategy and applied it to this new medium,” she suggested.
The college is also rolling out an ambitious multi-campus digital-signage network of its own, based on Scala software and using content provided by course participants.
It will comprise 42-inch NEC displays, at least three video walls, and kiosks.
