In Nebraska, digital billboards find another friend
While many American communities regard digital billboards as a contributor to visual blight, business leaders in Omaha, Nebraska have given a large LED screen pride of place in a downtown redevelopment.
Omaha’s chamber of commerce is making the 15-foot-by-12-foot screen, manufactured by Absen, the centrepiece of the entrance to the city’s historic Old Market area.
The screen, which complements a new interactive sculpture from a local artist, was originally intended to show the local Nebraska Cornhuskers football team in action.
But that plan was abandoned and instead its main function will be to welcome visitors to the historic city zone, which features original brick-paved streets and covered sidewalks.
The screen is driven by Keywest Technology’s MediaXtreme media player and MediaZone software.
Omaha may be a rare example of digital outdoor media receiving a positive welcome, but it is not the only one: in Hunstville, Alabama, a group dedicated to revitalising the downtown area is currently raising funds from other community organisations to buy a large digital billboard.
