All New York airports to get digital "welcome centres"
Parabit Systems has landed a high-profile deal with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey which will see many visitors to the Big Apple greeted by digital signage almost as soon as they arrive.
The $5.5m contract calls on the Roosevelt, New York-based firm to supply a flotilla of signage-based "welcome centres" at a total of 27 terminals within the four major New York airports: JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and Stewart.Construction of the digital welcome centres (artist's impression shown) will start later this month and run through to the middle of next year.
They will include around 60 kiosks and 350 digital displays, with planned screen sizes ranging from 32 to 50 inches.
The floor plan of each welcome centre, as well as the content shown on the screens, will be changeable to meet seasonal differences in passenger flows.
Plans call for the scattered sites to be centrally updated and controlled using Parabit's Media Signage software, the big brother of the company's entry-level Media Author package.
"The Media Signage software is highly flexible and ideal for airport applications, since it includes support for a variety of content, as well as RSS 2.0 feeds," said a Parabit spokesperson.
"This means each screen can feature a wide range of constantly-updated news and similar tickers, drawing from a variety of sources across the Internet," she added.
The hope is that the 100m-plus visitors a year flowing through the four major New York airports will use the kiosks and screens to gain access to a variety of content that will include hotels, restaurants, car rental and other traveller information.
"The objective was to strike a balance between the needs of the airport and the expectations of the visitor," said Rob Leiponis, Parabit's president.
