Battery-powered display aimed at older stores
After eight years in the screen-media business, Digital View has come up with a new variant on the theme: a battery-powered signage system.
Aimed at retail environments and other sites where digital signage is required but power is not available at all points in the premises, particularly older supermarkets, the VideoFlyer-SP system will be launched at the GlobalShop exhibition in Chicago on 18 March.
Based on five- and seven-inch LCD technology, the VideoFlyer-SP involves a marriage of LED-backlit LCD panels and 6V lantern batteries, according to spokesperson Dusty Perryman.
"Central to the system is the fact that the LCDs are not always on. There are a series of flashing buttons on the display that entice the customer to press for more information. The button is pressed, the screen comes on, plays the video loop and switches off," he told SCREENS.tv.
"We've calculated that, with a typical two hours of LCD on-time every 24 hours, the batteries will last at least 30 days. That means maintenance staff can visit the store once a month and swap out the four or six lantern batteries in the power pack," he said.
Digital View is also looking at the use of rechargeable battery power for the VideoFlyer-SP, as well as a new form of power that Perryman said is still under wraps.
Perryman noted that there are other battery power packs for LCD panels on the market, based on 24 D-cell arrays, but said "those systems require far more frequent battery changes".
