Museum screens “revolutionise art display”

In what is being hailed at the first cultural use of digital signage in Poland, two Polish firms – Abema Systemy Prezenracynjne and Veracomp – have installed a large multi-screen  system at the National Museum in Krakow.

The installation, which uses technology from Taiwan's Cayin Technology, employs LCD displays, projectors and optical mirrors to achieve what is being called a revolutionary approach to displaying art in a museum environment.

Hosted in the museum's main building, it is the centrepiece of an exhibition celebrating the art of Polish artist Stanislaw Wyspianski which runs throughout the summer.

According to a spokeswoman for the museum, the system uses optical mirrors to achieve a “floating effect” on the main screens and gives the site's many visitors the best possible view of Wyspianski's art. Polarised sound is also fed via 20 speakers across the exhibition.

“Wyspianski, who died in 1907 in Krakow, is credited with being a playwright, poet and theatre director. The aim of the exhibition is to promote his talents to as wide an audience as possible, which is why we are using [digital] signage at the museum for the first time,” she told SCREENS.tv.

And although the display will be taken down when the exhibition comes to an end this September, the plan is to continue using Cayin's smaller screen-media displays for other museum purposes.

Remote management

Alongside the five-metre-high main display screens, which receive images from projectors via mirrors, a series of LCD panels are running videos of Wyspianski's plays. Content for the entire system is managed remotely by Veracomp, one of the largest IT distributors in central and eastern Europe.

Although the technology being used at the museum is leading-edge, the National Museum in Krakow dates back to the 1870s and the logistics of installing a large digital-signage system in such an old building were a technical challenge. Michal Redziaic, Veracomp's director of digital signage, suggested that the technology making it possible it has only recently become available.
