Hospital network combines digital signage, PC screens
Two hospitals in the British city of Birmingham have combined digital signage with screen-savers on staff PCs to communicate with healthcare workers, patients and visitors alike.
The new network at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals – jointly known as University Hospitals Birmingham – links 75 LCD displays with 5000 desktop PCs.
Among the factors that pushed hospital administrators in the direction of digital signage was the proliferation of out-of-date and unauthorised information on conventional notice boards.
Content on the 42-inch digital-signage screens (pictured) will include hospital news, restaurant menus, information on training, local transport and weather updates, and national news.
Both the digital-signage displays and the PC screen-savers will include frequent reminders to wash hands to reduce the risk of infection – a major issue for some British hospitals – while the PCs will also target staff with information on energy-saving and other hospital issues.
The network, known as InVision, is based on Saturn Communications Group’s Connectvision system and can be updated in real time.
The two hospitals employ around 6900 staff and treat more than half a million patients annually in Britain’s second-largest city.
