Digital signage is bright spot for display makers

Digital signage is becoming an increasingly important market for makers of flat-panel displays (FPDs) as overall sales slow, according to the latest figures from DisplaySearch.

After swelling at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20 percent between 2000 and 2008, the FPD market will edge ahead by just one percent a year between 2008 and 2016, the researcher says.

However, digital signage – called “public displays” by the firm – and digital picture frames will be among the fastest-growing applications. Indeed, public displays will continue to match the overall market’s recent growth, with 20 percent CAGR forecast for 2008-16 as annual spend grows from $784m to nearly $3bn.

Digital picture frames, which some operators have recently started to use as vehicles for digital signage, will show a CAGR of 11 percent over the same period.

And although sales growth for FPD makers will not regain its previous momentum in the foreseeable future, the recent collapse in the market will soon ease. Overall sales this year are down 20 percent this year from 2008, according to DisplaySearch, but will rise again by 13 percent in 2010.

Electrophoretic displays – as used for e-paper – and OLED technologies will be among the strongest performers in the coming years, DisplaySearch suggested.
