AirMedia builds network at new Beijing terminal

Chinese out-of-home specialist AirMedia Group is extending its hold on the country’s airports with the addition of 600 digital frames at Beijing Capital International Airport’s new Terminal 3.

AirMedia will deploy DT Research Intel-based WebDT SA3000 digital-signage appliances at the terminal, first by the baggage claims and then at the entrances to the departure halls.

The 82- and 108-inch units, remotely managed by AirMedia, will reach more than 150,000 passengers a day with a ten-minute advertising loop.

At Beijing, AirMedia also has digital frames in Terminal 2, and non-digital inventory at Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

The firm operates TV-style screens at 41 Chinese airports – including the 30 biggest – as well as digital frames at 25, and sells advertising on screens in the aircraft of 12 airlines. It also has non-digital sites at airports.

And it continues to amass new sites. Last month, for example, AirMedia won the right to operate three large LED displays at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport until the end of 2015, and it has expanded beyond the airport and airline market with a contract to build an out-of-home network at 8000 Sinopec gas stations.

However, it has not been immune to the economic downturn, with income from its digital frames affected sharply.

In the first quarter of 2009, AirMedia’s total revenue was down 19 percent on the previous quarter, although that represented a 51.8 percent increase on the same period a year earlier. Revenue from digital frames showed an even more dramatic pattern, increasing 79.7 percent over the year but dropping 30.1 percent between the last quarter of 2008 and the first of 2009.

AirMedia will report second-quarter financials on 17 August.
