Samsung: screen demand soaring in Middle East
Samsung Electronics says demand for its large-format displays has trebled in the Middle East during 2009.
Sales of such screens are widely seen as an indicator of interest in digital out-of-home media. Researcher DisplaySearch, for example, recently tied a similar – but less dramatic – increase in U.S. shipments of large LCD displays from vendors such as Samsung to the growth of the American digital-signage market.
“In 2009 we have seen exceptional growth in the professional display segment, with over 200 percent growth for the Middle East region,” said Madhav Narayan, general manager of the IT division at Samsung Gulf Electronics.
Samsung’s displays have been installed as part of digital-signage deployments at sites such as Sharjah Airport and Reel’s cinemas, as well as at other locations in the United Arab Emirates.
Narayan was speaking at the Dubai launch of Samsung’s latest displays, including a 65-inch interactive unit for educational users.
For 2010, the firm plans products including a 52-inch glasses-free-3D display and an LED-based digital-signage screen.
