Minicom spins off digital-signage unit
Another day, another digital-signage software supplier...but the latest firm set up to serve the digital out-of-home sector is already a familiar name.
Israel’s Minicom Advanced Systems, a 22-year-old company which sells remote-access systems and KVM equipment as well as digital signage, has spun off its DOOH division into a separate firm – Minicom Digital Signage, or MDS.
The new company is backed by a $6m investment led by Jerusalem Venture Partners, which focuses on technology and media companies. Also buying in was Aviv Ventures, which says it specialises in technology firms providing “high-tech solutions to low-tech industries”.
MDS CEO Ronni Guggenheim said: “This investment is the natural next step in MDS’s life cycle. The support of our investors positions us to explore inorganic growth options and to drive...towards the establishment of MDS as a full-scale enabling platform in the digital-signage market.”
At Jerusalem Venture Partners, general partner Gadi Tirosh said: “MDS, with its seasoned leadership, global footprint, and strong operating history from within Minicom, is poised to build a broader platform in this growing but still fragmented market.”
Headquartered in Jerusalem, MDS also has offices in Switzerland, the UK and the U.S.
Its technology is claimed to drive more than 400,000 screens worldwide, with customers including Wal-Mart Mexico, the Toronto subway system, Bancomer Bank in Mexico, Israel’s Bank Leumi, and Landmark cinemas in the U.S.
Minicom Advanced Systems – itself the recipient of venture funding from Intel Capital – formally established a separate digital-signage division last year, although it had been active in the sector for some years previously.
