Lightscape to build outdoor LED network in China
Hong Kong LED lighting specialist Lightscape Technologies has entered into a new joint venture to build a digital outdoor-advertising network in China, as economic growth and the forthcoming Olympics continue to spur interest in the Chinese outdoor market.
Bondy Tan, president and CEO of Lightscape, said that his company had signed a joint-venture agreement with Beijing-based Xintong Media to "jointly capitalize on the burgeoning LED-based outdoor-advertising opportunities in Greater China".
Xintong has existing operations in advertising, billboard distribution and TV production and is a subsidiary of New World Group, one of Hong Kong's largest conglomerates.
Tan said that Lightscape would contribute its expertise in sourcing large LED screens from China, proprietary software controller systems, and installation design. It has hitherto worked on many large LED displays like the one pictured.
Xintong for its part will use its connections to obtain government licences for LED screen installations as well as providing the joint venture with access to its existing sales channels, advertising clients, and major property developments owned by its parent New World Group, which will be prime locations for the screens.
Tan said: "The joint venture is targeting niche applications which are currently under-served by existing competition. Target applications include the installation of mega-sized LED screens and video walls averaging approximately 150 square meters in area, located primarily on the outdoor facade walls of shopping centres, hotels, offices and other commercial buildings."
He added: "The joint venture has secured access to install LED advertising screens at a total of 30 prime property developments in Greater China. Phase one of the ramp-up targets the installation of ten LED screens by the end of calendar year 2008. These initial screens will be primarily located in Beijing, in large part to capitalize on the advertising opportunities generated by the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. An additional 15 LED screens are targeted to be installed in China during calendar year 2009."
Stores owned by New World Group could be important sites for the joint venture. Its retail arm currently operates a large national network of 22 New World-branded department stores and seven Ba Li Chun Tian-branded department stores in mainland China and Hong Kong. The group plans to open three new stores in Beijing, Wuhan and Liaoning by the end of 2008.
