Nexcom builds PC for on-road digital signage

A new PC from Nexcom has been developed specifically for digital signage in vehicles.

The VTC 2000, based on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, is powered from the vehicle’s battery and engineered to withstand the shock and vibration of movement.

Integrated GPS allows it to deliver location-related content and advertising, while wireless connectivity options including Bluetooth and WLAN could let digital-signage operators update content on the move

TV show mixes out-of-home, phones, online

The trend toward combining out-of-home screens with other digital media for audience interaction is highlighted again this month as cable network VH-1 ties up with LocaModa and Zoom Media and Marketing to promote its pop-culture show The Great Debate.

U.S. viewers will be able to interact with the show by SMS text messaging at 300 of the nightlife locations where Zoom has screens, through Viacom’s giant display in New

Wearable media just got smaller, thanks to Taiwan’s Sun Group.

The company’s Digital Tag is a digital-signage display measuring just 2.4x2 inches and designed to be worn as a name tag.

The company believes retailers could supply it to their employees to display promotions, and the organisers of job fairs and conventions could issue the tags to delegates.

With 320x240 resolution, the Digital Tag supports AVI and

Plasma “will be back to rival LCD”

While plasma displays have lately been eclipsed by LCDs for digital signage, they could soon rebound, according to researcher DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch’s report on public displays for the first quarter of 2009, which covers shipments of flat-panel displays larger than 26 inches for commercial out-of-home applications, says total shipments of all technologies were up two percent year-on-year but down ten percent on the previous quarter.

Mitsubishi claims record for Dallas LEDs

Mitsubishi Electric is claiming the title of world’s largest high-definition LED display for its installation at the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium, which opened at the end of last month.

The $40m Mitsubishi project at the stadium is led by four Diamond Vision screens. The two sideline displays measure 22x49m each, while the end-zone displays are each 9x15.5m.

The American football team’s stadium also houses four large screens on

Remote Media adds UGC support to Signagelive

Britain’s Remote Media is adding support for user-generated image and video content to its Signagelive software-as-a-service (SaaS) digital-signage system.

Screens driven by Signagelive will now be able to incorporate still images and moving video from Flickr, Google’s Picasa Web Albums and Photobucket into their layouts, as well as content from any platform delivered in Media RSS (MRSS format).

Altierre scoops national retailer for digital signage, ESLs

U.S. retail technology specialist Altierre says it has signed an agreement to provide digital signage to an unnamed national chain with more than 1000 stores.

A pilot project will be followed by a larger-scale rollout, according to Altierre, which is supplying battery-powered electronic shelf labels (ESLs) linked by wireless as well as larger digital signs.

The six-year-old company, which to date has raised $52m from investors, says it
